Viderum is an open data solutions provider spun off from Open Knowledge, an internationally recognized non-profit working to open knowledge and see it used to empower and improve the lives of citizens around the world.
We build tools, provide advice, implement projects, and develop communities in the area of open data: data which can be freely shared and used. Our mission is to make the world’s public data discoverable and accessible to everyone.
Work with us
If you’re excited about advancing open data and data publishing, consider working with us. We are a small team of open data enthusiasts who believe that open, scalable, easy-to-use technology is the key to getting governments, institutions, and businesses to publish their data for everyone to use.
We are looking for:
- Marketing and Communications Manager (f/m), part time
- Project Manager (f/m)
- Office Management Working Student (f/m)
What is Viderum’s business?
Viderum provides services and products for governments, institutions, and local authorities to publish open data. Specifically, we offer low-cost CKAN hosting on a scalable cloud-based infrastructure, CKAN technical support, custom open data website and CKAN extension development, and technical consulting related to open data.
What does CKAN mean?
CKAN is a data management system that makes data accessible – by providing tools to publish, share, find and use data. CKAN is aimed at data publishers (national and regional governments, companies and organizations) wanting to make their data open and available. For more on how we use CKAN, please go to the CKAN Cloud section.
What is the nature of the relationship between Open Knowledge International and Viderum?
Open Knowledge is a worldwide non-profit network of people passionate about openness, using advocacy, technology and training to unlock information and enable people to work with it to create and share knowledge. Viderum is a commercial subsidiary of Open Knowledge (i.e. it is owned by Open Knowledge) that provides products and services for open data publishing. Viderum takes on many of the commercial-oriented projects such as building custom open data portals that Open Knowledge has taken on in the past. Surpluses generated by Viderum will flow back into Open Knowledge to fund their non-profit work.
How will Viderum interact with and support the CKAN community?
We have a strong commitment to open source. We also want to advance core CKAN work, so we provide development and communication resources to that end in tight coordination with the CKAN tech team. Finally, we also want to support community events that promote open data publishing and reuse. This is why we recently joined the CKAN Association.
Why did Open Knowledge create Viderum?
For the past six years, Open Knowledge has offered commercial services to governments and public institutions within its Services division. Viderum is a spin-off from this division. Open Knowledge is doing this because it wants to lend a stronger focus to further development and promotion of these services without distracting Open Knowledge’s core mission as an advocate for openness and transparency. We’ve also heard from our customers that they are asking for a commercial-grade service offering that is best realized in an organization dedicated to that end.
